Care that acknowledges the role that trauma plays in people’s lives
Care that seeks to change the paradigm from "What's wrong with you?" to "What has happened to you?”
Trauma histories often lead to chronic mental and physical health/substance abuse/learning difficulties and/or behaviour problems. Understanding this vicious circle, and knowing effective ways of working with survivors is what makes you "Trauma-Informed."
Are you a teacher? Doctor? Nurse? Social Worker? Police officer? Counsellor? Peer-support worker? If so, you are probably working with survivors of simple or complex trauma, even when you or they aren't able to describe the specifics verbally. In this workshop, you will learn how trauma impacts the brain, emotions and body so that you can predict and address the resulting behaviour competently. You will be equipped with tools to use to prevent getting pulled into trauma reenactments, and to work respectfully and effectively with people who have traumatic histories.
Cost and Arrangements: $465 total cost for each 3 hour workshop for 5 people or less, equals $95 per person if you get 5 or more, but it will cost more per person if there are less than 5 in your group. Recommend breaking the training into 2 meetings of 90 minute each to avoid Zoom fatigue For more information: email: jlightstone at gmail.com
Embodied Empowerment for Helpers
Working with survivors of trauma puts you in jeopardy of losing boundaries and getting drawn into trauma re-enactments. Embodied Empowerment teaches you to experience boundaries on a physical level and communicate them to your clients/patients in a way that is consistent, gentle and firm.
In this tutorial you will fine tune your observational skills of others and of your own internal reactions (mindfulness). You will learn effective verbal scripts and practical somatic resourcing and intervention skills through role plays; concrete skills to help you balance your own needs with the needs of those you are helping.
You will learn how to:
Stay present with people who are reliving trauma without getting over or under-involved
Feel and stand your ground and help others to feel and stand their ground
Set and maintain clear consistent boundaries
Stay balanced and present when confronted
Escalate assertions when necessary

Working with Body Image and Eating Problems
A 6 hour Zoom tutorial:
Course Description: Self-feeding in accordance with physical hunger and fullness is one of the most fundamental resources for developing an embodied sense of self. Counsellors, mental health workers, teachers and health workers (GPs, nurses, etc.) will learn to recognise the signs and risks of eating and body image disturbance and be able to have an impact on clients, patients and students struggling with these issues using education and consciousness raising. Working with these problems can open a window into the deepest self…if we know how to listen.
The Anti-deprivation Approach to Intuitive Eating was developed by the Women's Therapy Centre in London and the Women's Therapy Institute in New York City (Susie Orbach of Fat is a Feminist Issue) and is the foundation of intuitive eating. You will be taken through the programme to learn intuitive eating and how to work on body image issues experientially, so that you will then be able to apply the basics of this approach in your work with students and clients. The tutorial will combine presentation and experiential activities, incorporating:
The anti-deprivation approach to intuitive eating
Ego State Work with Guided Imagery
Bodily mindfulness
Media Literacy and Critical Thinking
Eating Disorders and Obesity
